Facebook Growing By 600k Users A Day
Social Networking site Facebook is entering a staggering growth period. Inside Facebook has the details.
While Facebook has been growing at around 300,000 to 400,000 active users per day for most of the fourth quarter (based on our estimations), its growth rate seems to have significantly increased in recent weeks to 600,000 or perhaps even 700,000 new users each day.
If Facebook continues at this rate, it could add up to 20 million new users in December and reach 200 million active users by March. Keep in mind however that about 70% of that growth is happening outside the United States.
   * 13 million users update their statuses at least once each day
   * 2.5 million users become fans of Pages each day
   * 700 million photos are uploaded to the site each month
   * 4 million videos are uploaded each month
   * 15 million pieces of content (web links, news stories, blog posts, notes, photos, etc.) are shared each month
   * 2 million events created each month
   * 19 million active groups exist on the site
It will be interesting to see how FacebookConnect affects traffic. I’m running it here, you can log in and leave a comment with your Facebook account.

Dating Industry Market Size
I am working on an online dating industry report and am looking for stats and numbers regarding the size of the US dating market. I’m in data-gathering mode and would appreciate it if you would contact me if you have information to share. I’m fine with keeping sources confidential and if you share with me, I’ll share what I learn with you.
Comscore and others have produced wildly varying predictions. I have some of the data but at this point I’d like to review whatever I can get my hands on.
General consensus is that the online dating market flattened out in 2005-2006 in the US and the majority of growth is happening overseas as major US dating sites move into EU and Asia through acquisitions and expansion. I’m looking for the numbers to back this up, or refute it, or tells another story entirely. Other factoids that would make interesting reading are welcome as well.

Researching the amount of images Facebook deals with every day, I found the following:
- 2-3 Terabytes of photos are being uploaded to Facebook every day
- They have just over one petabyte of photo storage
- They serve over 15 billion photo images per day
- Photo traffic peaks at over 300,000 images served per second

Missed Predictions: Mobile Dating
I’ve been going through old news and have come up with some examples of missed predictions.
According to Yankee Group research, active users of mobile interactive, entertainment and community applications, which include premium chat, flirting and dating services, are forecasted to grow from 960,000 in 2003 to 16.3 million in 2008, for a cumulative annual growth rate of 76.3 percent.

More people Meeting, Getting Married Online
One in eight people married last year in the US met online. That’s it? Let’s see that number somewhere around 3 and we’ll have something to talk about. Right now we’re still fumbling around trying to figure out what works and what doesn’t.
today I promise I will not be talking about the new niche site for mullet-lovers. I have standards, you know.

Finding A Good Muslim Dating Service
I’m not a Muslim. In fact, I’m not a Christian either, at least not a practicing one. When it comes to religion, I try to keep it out of my daily life and it rarely enters into my dating life, except with my last girlfriend, but that’s a story for another time. You could imagine my surprise when the other day a friend of mine, who knows me pretty well, asked if I could recommend a Muslim dating service for him. While I’m sort of a dating guru to my friends, I’ve never tried dating Muslims. This is not out of any type of bias on my part, just the way things have turned out until now.
Match.com Members send a Billion emails
To celebrate the billionth email sent between UK members, Match.com is launching a consumer panel. I probably would have baked a cake or something. Convening a panel just doesn’t seem a festive way to mark such an incredible milestone.
